The Katrina Dogs - Their Journey

CAPP, Greyhounds as Companions, several other local animal rescue organizations and Greyhound Rescue of Ohio (GRO), responded to the Katrina Hurricane disaster. GRO hired a Greyhound dog transporter to bring 48 Katrina dogs back from Tylertown, Mississippi; Ohio State University's College of Veterinary Medicine provided interim medical care and quarantine; and then 27 Katrina dogs headed to Albany!

NOW
The Katrina dogs are in the Capital District. They are receiving appropriate medical care, being socialized and evaluated, and awaiting their availability for adoption in late December or early January. In the interim, CAPP and the other animal rescue organizations involved in this effort are accepting adoption applications, which are available on their respective web sites:

Please note that, given the extraordinary and lengthy care most of these dogs require, adoption fees may be higher than a particular rescue group's usual fees.

CAPP'S KATRINA DOGS
CAPP has ten Katrina dogs (listed below). Applications are being accepted now for these dogs (http://www.capp-petplacement.org/adopt); they will be reviewed when the dogs are available for adoption. As with any of CAPP's pets, our regular adoption policies apply. In addition, they will not be placed on a first come/first served basis--CAPP will only place them in what we determine to be an appropriate home.

Following are descriptions and some pictures of CAPP's Katrina dogs.

Information on how you can help the Katrina dogs is on our "CAPP's Program" page: http://www.capp-petplacement.org/capp_program.html

We also have many other wonderful pets for adoption, so please be sure to visit them too - http://www.capp-petplacement.org/pet_adopt%2705.html

CUPID, Pomeranian (15 pounds, about 18 months old, blonde color). An easygoing, friendly, happy little man who gets along with everyone! Cupid was pictured on Pet Connection's special on Hurricane Katrina dogs.
GRAHAM, a lovely small golden/red Spaniel mix, ~10 years old. He really looks like a mini-Golden Retriever! He was emaciated when rescued and only weighed 18 pounds when he arrived in Albany; a good weight for him would probably be 30 pounds or so. This is one lovely dog who has obviously endured a lot and certainly deserves a wonderful new life! An all adult home is required--Graham has truly earned a quiet home and some pampering! Graham was pictured on Pet Connection's Hurricane Katrina special.

TWIGGY, a cute, petite black and white Terrier/Italian Greyhound mix, around 15 pounds. Twiggy is relatively easygoing and quiet but can be playful. She was pictured on Pet Connection's Hurricane Katrina special--she was called Trevor on the show and was identified as a male. But Twiggy is all girl!

TYLER, named for the town the dogs all came from--Tylertown, Mississippi. About 25-30 pounds. A nice, ~8 year old gentleman who seems very wise--he could probably run the place if we let him! He is most likely a mix of Corgi (ear set and distinctive red brindle coloring) and Shiba Inu (curled tail and overall fine-boned build) with something else thrown in. Tyler would do best in a home where someone is home most of the time--a retired person, perhaps--he really loves to be around people! He was pictured on Pet Connection's Hurricane Katrina special--he was called Curtis on the show.
PROFESSOR SNUGGLESWORTH, a leggy fawn/white short-haired Chihuahua (possible mix), 8-10 pounds, about 6-8 years old. The Professor is easygoing, quiet and, as his name implies, snuggley! He was pictured on Pet Connection's Hurricane Katrina special.

BEST FRIEND, named for the sanctuary that was running the animal shelter in Tylertown, Mississippi. He is an All American mix--Hound probably, some Rottweiler maybe. Friend is a young (10-12 monts old) handsome boy, about 40 pounds right now but should be about 50 pounds. He is very playful and active and is not an apartment dog. He plays well with dogs ~35 pounds or larger; cannot be placed with cats. Friend would do best in a dog smart household; children should be over 10 years of age since he's too rambunctious for younger children.

MAGIC, a stockily built wire-haired terrier mix (~10 pounds)--black with some white markings, 3-4 years old. He is cuddly, very people oriented. He doesn't want to be alone very much--you can't blame him when you consider what he has been through!

JAZZ, a leggy wire-haired terrier mix (16 pounds)--mostly white with black markings, around 3-4 years old He will be a typical "terrier" when he's gained weight and becomes acclimated to his new surroundings, so he will need an active household to keep up with him. Jazz was featured on Pet Connection's Hurricane Katrina special.

CLEOPATRA, German Shepherd Dog/Labbie, a very nice, well adjusted mix, She's young (10-12 months) and ~35 pounds right now, but she will probably grow a bit more. Very mature and well-behaved for her age; she adjusts to new situations easily and is playful and affectionate.

MARIE, a lovely All American mix, about 30-35 pounds--probably Shiba Inu, maybe a little Chow. Marie has obviously had a tough life during her 3-4 years on this earth; she clearly has had many litters of puppies. She was found under a house after Hurricane Katrina. This is a quiet, loving dog who desperately wants to bond with someone. Marie was featured on Pet Connection's Hurricane Katrina special.
